Task 4

The media have a great influence in changing people’s ideas these days. Sometimes I agree and sometimes I disagree because of some reasons. In this task I’m going to write about these reasons.
Firstly, I will discuss about why I agree. Reason number one is TV. People who watch something on TV try to copy it, like dancing, singing or policy like what happened in some countries around the world to change their leaders. Video games is reason number two. This one can change kid’s ideas more than people. Kids can play dangerous games which can effect them badly. Finally, the internet, from it I can get any information I want.
Now I will discuss the reasons why I disagree. Media or social network don’t always influence in changing people ideas, there are other things that can influence. Firstly family, they have a huge impact on our life. My parents, brothers or grandparents, I try to copy my father or big brother like how they walk or talk. Another reason is teachers. Sometimes I feel like they are our second parents or friends. Our teachers they can change our ideas if they are wrong, they teach us attitude and respect. The last reason is friends, who influence us in communication, socialising and sometimes in hobbies.
In my opinion we should teach our kids or children in which one can believe or when they can change their ideas. Not everything should influence us.

TASK 3

The graph shows the number of fishermen in millions for different regions between 1970, 1980 and 2000, and the table shows the world’s top ten exporters of fish in 2000. Overall I’m going to write about this in my second paragraph.
Firstly I’m going to write about the graph. The number of fishermen in Asia increased from 11 million to 26 million in 2000. However South America remained the same during these 3 years. The number of fishermen in Europe fluctuated from 13 million to 8 million then rose again to 13 million.
Secondly I’m going to talk about the table.  Thailand ranked on the top of table as the world’s highest top ten exporter of fish in 2000. South Korea ranked number ten as lowest exporter of fish in 2000.
In conclusion, some Asian countries have developed within the world’s top ten exporter of fish in 2000 because of the highest number of fishermen there.

TASK 2

From time to time people like to move or change their cities or countries for some reasons. But today people move more than ever before. In this essay I’m going to write about the challenges that people experience to move and what strategies there are to meet these challenges.
Many challenges could be behind this move. Language could be the first challenge. People are from different countries so their languages are different so it’s difficult to understand each other. Secondly the different of culture and religions, for example clothes and food. Muslim people sometimes can’t eat or drink or wear what other religions allowed.  Culture it’s all different. This problem could be important and that is the community where people live, they don’t know anyone there, which made them move to another city.
The strategies to overcome challenges are a lot, first one is language. You should know a little about other languages by taking a language course or learn it from someone. Another strategy is culture, it’s so simple to know about any country’s culture and you don’t need to move or ask all you need  using Internet, with one click you find everything. However, if you don’t like internet it’s easy to find anything about this country or city culture all you need is find a library. Make new friends in your new area and letting your kids too can make your living in this area easily.
In conclusion and my opinion is all people in the world are different in many things. They talk differently, eat differently, drink differently, walk differently, but believe me we all are similar, only we are different in culture, languages and religions. We need to know each other or you need to know at least your community people and their language and culture.

TASK 1

The graphs show films shown in Britain and Australia by origin in 2000 and cinema attendance from 1980 – 2000 measured in millions.
As can seen from the bar graph 75% of films shown in Britain are US films and 67% in Australia. People in Australia watched only Australian films. However in Britain they had both, Australian and with 20% British films. Other films in Australia are more than Britain.
The line graph shows that the highest attendance was in Britain compared with Australia since 1980. The attendance in Britain fluctuated throughout the period 1980 to 1990. There was a slow rise in Britain from 1990 to 2000. The attendance in Australia stood at 40 million from 1984 to 1990, and then the number increased to reach 90 million people.
The main consolation that can draw from the graphical information is that attendance in each country is increasing slightly since 1990.

Jasim Al Hammadi's Formal Presentation (black hawk)

I will be writing a report about Jasim Al Hammadi’s presentation. His presentation was about a helicopter called the black hawk. His English was pretty good, easy to understand and his presentation was well made with many exciting pictures and he presented it well.
He talked about the company that built this helicopter, the specifications of it, the uses and the crew. He started by telling us about the manufacturer of it, including its engine power, how high and how fast can it fly. Then he talked about the crew of this helicopter that consists of a pilot, co-pilot and two gunners each at a door. Then he talked about the main uses for this helicopter. He started with giving us an example of its use in the army; they use it for the fast rope missions. Then he also said that the navy uses it for rescuing missions in the sea.
Finally he gave us some information about the weapons this helicopter could carry and that sometimes the rocket holders could be used to carry big petrol tanks for long distance missions.

Report of presentation

Hasan Jassim and Hasan Abdulla chose to present about expats. Hasan Jassim began the presentation clearly and he explained the general idea. Firstly, Hasan Jassim discussed the definition of expats. After that, he explained the reasons for bringing foreign workers to the country, for example he said like in building you will not find any national people who will work in building or has driver. Then, he talked about the negative points of expats and the risk they bring to the country. Next Hasan Abdulla talked about the positive points of expats. He mentioned a few appropriate solutions like stopping expats from outnumbering nationals. The work between Hasan Jassim and Hasan Abdulla was fabulous, each one took his time to complete and explain the idea clearly to the audience. The body language for Hasan Jassim and Hasan Abdulla was good .The graphics were good, colorful and the animation was very good. Finally, Hasan Jassim and Hasan Abdulla also answered more than 5 questions and this discussion followed the presentation and it was an interesting discussion.

Reflection 1

Reflection on meeting
On 7th March 2011 at 16:10 pm we had our first meeting and we discussed the biggest problem in Abu Dhabi and that was parking. Everyone in the group tried to do his best : the chair Abdulaziz , minute taker Jaber and participant Mr. Hedley our 3rd member and he is our LSEC 101 teacher because we are missing one person in the group, so he joined and completed the group. I’m taciturn and hesitant because I think the word I will say is wrong and I would thank Mr. Hedley because he can understand me.

But at the end it was a great exercise.

Meeting Assessment

Date of meeting: 7th March 2011
Time of meeting: 16:10
Venue: W007
Group members:
  •       Chair: Abdul-Aziz.
  •       Minute taker: Jaber.
  •       Participants: Hedley.
Venue preparation:

Agenda:
  •       Underground parking.
  •       Paid parking/short term – long term.
  •       Congestion charge / taxes / restrictions.
  •       Public transport.
  •       Increase age of driver.

Objectives:
The chairman AbdulAziz opened the meeting at 16:32
1.     Underground parking.
Jaber said it is a good idea
Hedley worried about the price.
AbdulAziz said the cost of underground parking should be limited. Hedley asked if new buildings were required to have sufficient parking space. Were the regulations enforced? Jaber said no.
2.     Paid parking ( short term & long term )
This is now quite common in Abu Dhabi and it has reduced congestion.
Hedley pointed out that some residents who have bought 1 or 2 permits still can’t find space to park.  AbdulAziz suggested designated areas for short-term parking. People who buy permits should have designated spaces. Hedley suggested + Jaber + AbdulAziz agreed.
3.     Congestion charge /taxes/restrictions.
Hedley asked if a Salik-type system as in Dubai would work in Abu Dhabi. Jaber pointed out it would be more difficult as there is no metro for people to use instead of their cars. The extra workload on the police of enforcing extra restrictions, and the cost + delay of implementing such schemes was mentioned by Jaber + Abdul-Aziz.
4.      Public transport
AbdulAziz suggested a new metro. Hedley asked if there was enough space in the town for a metro.  Jaber said there is room if construction is carefully planned. He also suggested free parking 08:00-15:00 so all workers could leave their cars at home. AbdulAziz highlighted the need for a number of stations in all areas.
5.     Increased age of driver?
Jaber thought this is a bad idea- many younger drivers are needed in families where older members have died or cannot drive. AbdulAziz pointed out that 18 year olds need to get to college. If you live in Shahama a car is the only way.
  •     In conclusion we thought that

1.     Underground parking is a good idea. Rules about new buildings having adequate parking must be strictly enforced.
2.     Paid parking has made the situation better but more thought is needed, e.g. on permits and designating special time +space.
3.     We were in favor of more restrictions like the Salik card.
4.     We liked the idea of building public transport especially a metro.
